Maximise the benefits of your Throw & Tow skip hire by understanding proper skip usage. Whether you’re working on a construction site or managing a renovation, it’s important to know how to efficiently load your skip and be aware of what waste can and cannot be disposed of. Follow our tips to ensure you make the most of your skip hire experience.

For Trade Waste Tips: you will need a waste carrier licence and a transfer note is required (we can do one on the day if required). All waste if priced by load, not weight, on the day.

How To Load A Skip Effectively

Unfortunately, if you want to fill your skip effectively, you shouldn’t just chuck items in and hope for the best -instead you should take more of a Tetris-like approach:

Load flat heaviest items first – making sure to lay them flat to create a solid base for the remaining items to pile onto
Load heaviest items next – load your bulky, heavy items, try to line up the corners of your items as best as you can to optimise space
Crush smaller items – with cardboard boxes or packaging, make sure to crush/flatten them first.
Place items layer by layer – when placing items in your skip, don’t just stack them, place them layer by layer
Break down bulk items into smaller parts – If you have a table or chairs, for example, try to break it down into smaller parts, i.e. the tabletop and then the table legs, deconstructing larger items is a great way to optimise space.

No matter the project, if you’re clearing out your loft or garden, renovating your home or office building, or simply having a spring clean, a skip is a useful addition. However, it is important to maintain skip safety when disposing of your waste.

Skip position – Where is your skip located? Is it positioned on a flat, stable surface in a wide-open area? Ensure your skip is properly secure before filling it up.
Load carefully – Follow our tips above and ensure you load your skip with care.Wear gloves when possible to avoid cuts.
Do not dispose of hazardous waste – While our skips can be filled with most household or commercial waste items, we do have a few things which cannot be thrown in the skip, including: Batteries, Gas cylinders, Medical waste, Asbestos, Fluorescent Bulbs, Fridges/freezers, Fuel, Paint, Television, Tyres, Solvent / white spirit.
